If you wanted to make standard outlet strips
into surge suppressors it would cost literally less than 50 cents
a piece. That is why you can buy these surge protection products at the local electronics emporium for $10 or less. The
surge suppressors that cost more may have nicer enclosures, more lights and better filtering capabilities (along with a thermal fuse to shut the unit down in case of fire) but the surge protection elements (Metal Oxide Varistors or MOV's ) are the same.
As far as we can tell almost all of the stereo and home theater power conditioners available offer exactly the same level of
surge protection as those inexpensive surge suppressors. Now in defense of the manufacturers they undoubtedly consider their units first and foremost power conditioners
and not surge suppressors. It is our opinion that you should measure them as just that... power line conditioners. MOV based surge
protection products, no matter how expensive, are just not very good.

surge suppressors represent the best surge suppressors you can buy for your system... period. Are they good filters? Yes, they are exceptional filters but it is as surge
protection devices that they stand alone. They will never fail. They do not contribute to system noise. They are not a safety
hazard. MOV based surge protection products do, will and are.
